A series of 7 choreographic displays explore the richness of human relations. The theme is the “intuitive” relationship with music. original musical compositions, written for the 20th Anniversary of the Printemps des Arts have been selected by Jean-Christophe Maillot from the work of seven contemporary composers who have been invited specially for the Printemps des Arts to take a fresh look at the deep ties between music and dance. The Ballets de Monte-Carlo presented this stunning creation at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco in April 2004 where the DVD in hand was recorded as well.
Reborn in 1985, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo has earned recognition as an exceptional international company that responds to new directions, respects historical traditions and is open to the future. Since 1993, Maillot has created a distinctive repertoire for this company of 50 dancers. Passionate about the evolution of classical dance, Maillot`s personal search has given rise to a new language, brimming with fantasy and possessed of restraint: "For Miniatures, I`ve tried to avoid the temptation of choosing music that would sustain and define a priori my choreographic space. In order to improvise my choreography, as a challenge, I`ve allowed myself be open to any music, any score, whatever its nature.(…) The 7 pieces haven`t been composed for dance (…). Offer these seven miniatures; impose on them a choreography with no preconditions apart from the need to group them together, as if they were jigsaw pieces, in a single choreographic piece. This is the rule I imposed on myself—a dream, a challenge for myself, a reencounter I was hoping for. How far could I go in questioning the fundamental, primary and conditional relationship between dance and music? (…)”
